New Screen Attachment (NSA)

After collecting a pile of ruined window screens, our client turned to my team of four to design a creative solution. She tasked us with building a window screen to defend against her neighbor’s dog, Edward Snowden. We designed and manufactured an aluminum window screen with an acrylic covering to prevent tearing at the bottom.

Observing the behavior of the dog at the window screen inspired the idea of having only half of the screen protected. Edward was quite a small but tenacious dog. Once we realized only the bottom part of the screen fell victim to his attacks, many windows of opportunity opened up.

Our solution was building a custom window screen from scratch and fitting a piece of acrylic into the bottom of the frame. We used shop machines such as a mill and lathe and assembled the final product by hand. I laser cut the glass and cut and bent the pieces of aluminum to shape the frame.

This project showed me that the best solution isn’t always the flashiest. Designing for the specific dog situation allowed us to be efficient in our approach. Instead of creating something totally new, we built upon existing products to fit what the client actually needed.
